Training

RIVER ROAD KENNELS specializes in training your retriever to become an efficient duck and goose hunting dog.  We know what it takes to train a retriever that anyone would be proud to share a blind with.  Our Gun Dog Training Program emphasizes monthly owner participation, encouraging the owners to visit our kennels and train with their retrievers.

We understand that each dog matures and progresses at his own pace, and we tailor our program to meet his individual needs.  Training times vary from dog to dog, but the schedule below is a rough estimate of the expected length of training, depending on your individual plans for your retriever.

Obedience:  4-6 weeks time, usually starting at age 6 months, depending on the dog's maturity.  Your retriever will learn to sit, heel, "here," and other basic obedience commands.

Level One:  3-4 months time; your retriever will deliver a bird to hand, perform land and water singles and short doubles, and will be steady.  He will be at the AKC's Junior Hunter level, and will be ready to hunt with you for dove or ducks.

Level Two:  5-7 months time, AKC Senior Hunter and UKC Seasoned level of competition.  Your retriever will be performing complex doubles and straightforward triples, will be collar-conditioned, and will be sitting on a whistle and handling to blinds.  He will be a hunting companion you can be proud of, and will be a great asset in the duck blind.

Level Three:  AKC Master Hunter level; an excellent hunting companion.

We will be happy to evaluate your retriever and discuss your individual needs and plans.
